14 Apr A New Season for New Beginnings
When April finally arrived at our home in VT 11 years ago my son Jeff asked me why didn’t I stop riding the stationary bike in my living room and buy a real bike I could ride outside? After all it was springtime! So after thinking about for a bit (an entire month) I did go to a bike shop and purchase the type of bike I thought I wanted at the time. So for $200.00 I purchased a Giant brand Sedona model! Prophetic right?! I did not purchase a helmet that day. I never rode with a helmet as a child and I didn’t want to look “silly”. My dear husband told me several times that he would come visit me in the nursing home after my head injury from a fall off my bike. All sarcasm aside, I heard him loud and clear and bought a helmet! And so my love affair with bicycles began.
There is never a “wrong” time to start improving ourselves. After all, we are the only ones who truly can, right?
Want to lose a few pounds? Have a wedding coming up in a few months? A vacation you want to look really hot for? Or do you just want to work your muscles and relieve some stress? Any of these are perfect reasons to start riding! Cycling is easy on your joints and you can do it for many years. I know a dear man who I’ve ridden with many, many Fridays who just turned 90 and he’s still riding every day. Another dear friend will be 81 next month and will be participating in Ride The Rockies for the third year in a row. These men are role models to me. I also have several women friends in their 70’s who still ride regularly.
In these days of such high medical costs it just makes sense to do whatever we can to keep ourselves healthy and strong. I have five grandchildren and I plan on being able to chase them around for many years to come.
So thank you to my son Jeff for encouraging me to buy a bicycle! If not for his encouragement I may not be where I am today.
